February 12, 2009
February 12, 2009 will mark the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. When our new president rededicates the Lincoln Memorial in 2009, what could it tell the world and our own children about who we are now if, 200 years after the birth of the “great emancipator”, the ceremony was led by our first black president?

Hello,
Thanks for your question about what it might mean to our country if the president who will re-dedicate the Lincoln Memorial might be an African-American. That's an interesting question for which an answer requires careful thought.
The re-dedication ceremony is actually scheduled in Washington on May 30, 2009, of next year and not on February 12. The re-dedication of the memorial will take place on "four score and seven years" after the original dedication in 1922.
